Touch screens dominates a larger user base of mobile devices. Tablets, smartphone continue to captivate users with improved and advanced touch aspects. Manufacturers are largely focusing on providing the best user experience through enticing displays and quick response of the touch screens. Though, this is true still there are people who prefer QWERTY phone over the touch screen.
In a recent survey held by Nokia, people were asked to raise their opinions on the number keypad, touch screen and QWERTY keypad. It was found that the QWERTY keypad won by 48.64% votes with touch screen in the second place with 34.69 votes. For many, it may be surprising as maximum users prefer touch screen rather than qwerty phones. However, there are few compelling reasons on why people continue to use QWERTY phones.
Qwerty keypads are ergonomically designed that allow greater speed and accuracy while typing. The layout of the keypad allows the user to get into a rhythm of typing and utilize the fingers to type fluidly. Unlike conventional keypad phones, where users needed to press the key several times to type a letter or a word, qwerty keypad phones have separate keys for each letter and symbol. This benefits the people who generally spend a lot of time on typing SMS, emails, social networking and browsing the internet.
Moreover, the keypad is rugged and does not bother the user for any damage, and also the tempo of typing is much higher on physical keypads.
The percentage of accuracy while typing on qwerty phones is much higher than the touch screen and conventional alternatives. Physical keypads allow the user to type quickly and accurately. Users feel more confident while hitting the keypad rather than touch screens. This ensures accurate data input. Although virtual keypads used in smartphones resembles qwerty keypads, but they offer less accuracy. In addition, it is easy for the user to switch between different phones with qwerty keypads, but it is difficult in touch screen devices.
Users of physical keypad phones are familiar with typing on a similar keyboard of laptop, desktops and typewriter. It does not take much time for users to get accustomed to qwerty phones. They just have to transfer their familiarity and knowledge of typing to the cell phones. For many it is just a difference in terms of the size of the device, and their brain is aware of where the characters. This allows the user to type fluidly and quickly.
Long lasting and less tiring
Since qwerty keypads have individual keys for every character, it makes typing a less tiring process. Lengthy emails, sms and other content can be easily typed without straining the fingers. In addition, qwerty keypads have a long life than conventional cell phone and touch screen. Since, every character is separate; it eliminates the need of hitting a single key multiple times for a single character. Touch screens tend to get damaged on typing long text on a consistent basis, and getting the touch screens repaired can be a costly endeavour.
Ease of using mobile apps
The availability of a vast number of applications demands a robust operating system and power packed smartphone. But relying on touch screens to explore the wide range of applications won’t serve the purpose. Closing, opening, shuffling, creating shortcuts and other things can be carried out with ease using a qwerty phone. It does not bother the user of damaging the screen with continuous use. Moreover, touch screen phones are more prone to breaking down when used on a consistent basis for a longer period of time.
Considering the numerous capabilities of mobile devices, touch screen holds an important place for users, but qwerty phone can be a worthy investment. All the leading brands of cell phones understand the importance of qwerty phones and have many in their arsenal. The ease of typing, familiarity and ruggedness of the qwerty phones are the added advantages. However, preferring a touch screen or a qwerty phone entirely depends on how users plan to use their phone.
